ACADEMIC CHEATING
Note: This page is intended as a help guide for teachers to improve awareness of cheating; defining academic dishonesty, ways students cheat, why students cheat, sources students frequently use for cheating, ways to prevent cheating, and sources teachers can use to check for academic dishonesty.

Definition
  • Academic cheating is defined as representing someone else's work as your own. It can take many forms, including sharing another's work, purchasing a term paper or test questions in advance, paying another to do the work for you.

Overview
  • Academic cheating is a major issue in our society and the innovative methods of cheating are increasing. The cheating occurs mostly at the high school and college levels. Education suffers tremendously when students cheat because true learning is not taking place. The internet technology has assisted high tech cheating by actually demonstrating to students how to cheat. The internet has also given tools to teachers on how to detect cheaters. Academic cheating does not serve the best interest of students, teachers, schools, or the intellectual health of the United States of America.

  • Students also engage in cheating through direct cheating. Students have found many ways to get around learning the material in class by simply putting the answers where no one will see them. This includes writing down dates, facts, or formulas that you should know for the test in a place where you can easily access them in a test setting.

Things to look for

Lets take a look at a few examples of how students cheat. These videos are available on Youtube and are easily accessable to students who are resourceful enough to find them. Pay attention as these examples may give you ideas of what to look for when giving tests to students.

Here is some of what was said on that blog:

"What ever hapend to just writing the answers on your hand, forearm or leg?"

"Yeah, my thoughts exactly. However, I think teachers got wise to that bold and obvious tactic. Some of the methods in those YouTube
videos are pretty darned sophisticated–which is what makes me think the kids are spending more cognitive effort on devising ways to
cheat than actually studying for the test would require."
